Megan Denotter never expected to pursue post-secondary education. She had planned to embrace a stay-home mother role but COVID-related employment challenges made it necessary for her to explore working outside the home.
She enjoyed working with her hands and did not want a desk job, so Megan investigated trades, choose electrical work and later, NAIT.
“I chose NAIT and the Electrician Apprenticeship program as it was local to me, and I heard positive things from others who’ve attended.”
Now in her second period, Michelle has received numerous student awards including the Anthem Properties Group Ltd. Apprenticeship Bursary, PCL Vanguard Grant - School of Skilled Trades, and the TransAlta Grant II.
“Receiving student awards have impacted my life, and my family’s lives, tremendously. It’s been amazing because I don’t have to stress about finances – I can focus on my learning. I have a husband and two kids. Rent is cheap but childcare isn’t so it’s been amazing to have that assistance.”
Megan is grateful to donors for supporting her development as a woman in the electrical trade. “I know that there are relatively few women in the trades, so these awards are especially meaningful to me. They help me and women like me, continue our career journeys and increase representation in these nontraditional fields.”
