Student award helps Abby explore opportunities in skilled trades

Even from a young age, Abby Morgan enjoyed learning how things worked. After a family member recommended that she become an electrician, she decided to take a closer look. She attended a NAIT’s Open House as part of her career exploration, where it sparked an interest in the Electrical Installations Technology program.

Now in her second year of the program, she’s putting theory into practice, and getting hands-on experience running conduits and panels.

“One part I really enjoy about construction is when you're done a job and you take a step back and say, ‘wow, I was part of that,’” she says.

That student award gave her not only financial relief, but also the time to focus on her studies and volunteer at the Jill of All Trades event last winter, where she took part at the day-long workshops to inspire female and female-identifying high school students explore skilled trades.

“I hope more people, especially women, see the trades as a real option. There’s so much opportunity for growth,” she continues, “I am thankful to donors who create student awards and sponsor events that allow us to explore new careers and come together as a supportive community.

In the future, Abby would like to come back to NAIT to study engineering technology and be involved in the design of electrical systems.
