Student awards provide transformative recognition for second-time NAIT student

When Fernando Lopez returned to NAIT in 2024 to enrol in the Civil Engineering Technology Co-op program, he brought with him years of experience in the personal fitness and construction industries and a determination to build a new future.

After graduating from NAIT’s Personal Fitness Training program in 2010, he spent several years as a trainer before launching a successful flooring installation business. Wanting to expand his understanding of construction beyond the hands-on aspects of the trade, he chose to return to NAIT and explore areas of interest such as design, drafting, project management, and municipal infrastructure.

This choice has been fruitful as Fernando received 3 student awards in during his 2 years of study, recognition he describes as both encouraging and transformative.

“Receiving even one award would’ve been significant,” he says. “Receiving 3 was a reminder that the hard work, late nights, weekends, and time invested in my studies were paying off.”

Beyond recognizing academic achievement, the student awards provided meaningful financial support during a transition from a dual-income household to a single income while attending school. The unexpected funding helped cover everyday expenses such as groceries, utilities, and mortgage payments, easing financial pressure and helping create a healthier balance between school and family life.

Fernando is deeply appreciative to donors who make student awards possible. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Your support makes a stressful situation more manageable and creates a truly positive experience for students.”
