NAIT welcomes apprentices to new campus in Spruce Grove

World-class facility supports industry, responds to Alberta’s need for a highly-skilled workforce

NAIT’s Spruce Grove Campus welcomes its first intake of apprentices today. The facility west of Edmonton is the new home to the polytechnic’s Crane and Hoisting programs.

These programs were previously located in Nisku, Alta., on leased land. Seven cranes are currently on site in Spruce Grove. The largest has a maximum extension capability of 60 meters (200 feet), equal to a 14- to 16-storey building. Later this year, training will be further enhanced with the introduction of simulation technology.
The campus is located on 134 acres of land, which provides the flexibility to accommodate other NAIT programs in the future that are better suited to an industrial location.

Crane operators work in a variety of industries, including the oil and gas sector, construction and more.

QUICK FACTS

  • Spruce Grove Campus is home to NAIT’s Crane & Hoisting Equipment Operator - Boom Truck and Crane & Hoisting Equipment Operator - Mobile Crane programs
  • Ground on the campus was broken less than a year ago – in November 2015 – and construction was complete this summer.
  • The campus includes a 1,170-square metre (12,600 square-foot) building, will allow NAIT to increase capacity in the programs by up to 80%, as demand warrants
  • It’s located on Golden Spike Road, 1.5 km south of Parkland Highway, on the south side of Spruce Grove

QUOTES

Dr. Glenn Feltham, President and CEO
“We’re very proud to announce the opening of Spruce Grove Campus. This is one-of-a-kind facility that elevates trades training, supports industry and responds to our province’s need for a highly-skilled workforce. We’re thrilled to be part of this community, and over time envision relocating additional programs that require significant space to this satellite campus.”

Malcolm Haines, Dean of the School of Skilled Trades
“Up until now, the Crane and Hoisting programs have been delivered from trailers on a leased piece of property in Nisku for 10 years. So it is very important to NAIT, industry, students and staff to now have a permanent place that they can be proud of – a place to call home.”
