NAIT has been recognized as one of Alberta’s top employers for the 12th straight year. The polytechnic’s continual commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion is cited as a key factor in making NAIT an exceptional place to work.
NAIT’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) launched several initiatives in the past year to engage and support people across the organization to help make the polytechnic a more equitable, diverse and inclusive community. Consulting services and EDI and intercultural workshops are offered to staff throughout the year, and a newly launched self-identification initiative provides staff and students with the option to add their pronouns and chosen names to their NAIT profiles.
A new safe spaces course is available to NAIT staff to learn more about the topics, terminology and strategies for inclusion most relevant for LGBTQ2S+ communities. Led by the polytechnic’s Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre, staff can participate in the Pîkiskwetân (Let's Talk) Sharing Circle Series – a powerful series to share truths and come together as community to learn about Canada’s treatment of Indigenous Peoples. NAIT is also a Pride at Work member and Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion employee partner.
Other reasons noted by Alberta’s Top Employer judges include:
- Supporting employees with family-friendly policies, including maternity leave top-up for new mothers, a variety of flexible work arrangements to help employees balance their personal commitments, and discounted tuition rates for children of employees.
- Helping employees plan for the future with a defined benefit pension plan and several practical financial benefits, including discounted auto lease rates and home and auto insurance.
Alberta’s Top Employer is an annual competition that recognizes 75 provincial employers who offer exceptional places to work. Workplaces are not ranked in any particular order. NAIT has been named a top employer each year since 2012.
