Today, NAIT’s CAT Crossing transformed into a space of reflection and remembrance as the polytechnic marked the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. The vigil honoured the 14 women murdered at Polytechnique Montréal in 1989 and all victims of gender-based violence.
At the heart of the event is a powerful installation which includes 14 empty chairs placed in a circle, symbolizing the 14 lives lost. Each chair includes photos, personal information and items to represent each of the murdered women. The circle provides community members a place to pause, reflect, and consider the ongoing impact of gender-based violence.
“This day calls us not only to remember, but to act,” said Laura Jo Gunter, NAIT President and CEO. “At NAIT, we remain deeply committed to ending gender-based and sexual violence. Through initiatives like our THIS MATTERS campaign and resources such as anonymous reporting tools, we are working to create a campus where everyone feels seen, supported, and safe.”

The event also aligns with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, an international campaign running from November 25 to December 20. NAIT’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to education, prevention, and support through initiatives like THIS MATTERS, which promotes empathy, respect, and accountability across campus.
“For many, this day carries pain, memory, and hope all at once,” said Lilly Houcher, NAITSA President. “It’s a chance to honour those impacted by gender-based violence and to remind ourselves that we can’t stay quiet in the face of injustice. As students, and as a community, our actions matter.”

As we honour the memory of the 14 women and all victims of gender-based violence, NAIT invites the community to join in reflection, and to take action toward a future defined by safety, equity, and care.
