NAIT reviews programs for future growth and innovation

The polytechnic conducts comprehensive program review

(Edmonton) NAIT is making changes to the academic programs it offers to ensure the polytechnic continues to meet the needs of students, industry and Alberta’s economy —now and in the years to come. While shifts in enrolment, international student policy, and rising costs have accelerated this work, these are not the only reasons NAIT is making changes.

Program impact

As part of a comprehensive program review, comprised of certificate, diploma and degree credentials, NAIT is pausing 18 programs —meaning student intakes will no longer be accepted while each program is reviewed. This review is grounded in a long-term vision: one where NAIT offers strong, relevant and sustainable programs that support student success and contributes meaningfully to the province’s future.

“This is not a decision that was made lightly, and we understand the ripple effect it will have”, says Peter Leclaire, Vice-President, Academic. “This, in no way reflects the talent, effort, or dedication of the people behind these programs. Each one has been built, taught, and supported by individuals who care deeply about their work, students, and teams.”

Why now?

NAIT is reviewing its programs to strengthen the institution’s academic foundation, reinvest in high-demand and emerging areas, and position NAIT for a strong future. At the same time, NAIT must remain financially and operationally sustainable.

“By making changes now, we’re positioning ourselves to expand high-demand programs, invest in innovation, and launch new offerings aligned with Alberta’s economy, industry needs, and student demand,” says Leclaire.

What happens next?

Over the next several months, the 18 programs will undergo further review to determine the best path forward.

Student impact

Students who are currently enrolled in paused programs will be able to finish their studies.

Prospective students who have applied for admission to paused programs will be contacted directly about alternative options to study at NAIT and provided with information on next steps.

NAIT offers a wide range of excellent programs. NAIT teams will work one-on-one with affected students to explore:

  • directly related programs in similar fields

  • other academic streams that match their interests and goals

  • alternate pathways that may offer even more opportunities, credentials, or industry alignment

The Student Service Centre is also available to help those who have questions about their options moving forward.
