Apprenticeship Funding

Know your funding options as an Apprentice

When you take time away from working to further your training and education, financial stress is the last thing you should worry about. With over 14,000 apprentices at NAIT, Financial Aid is here to help.

Canada Apprentice Loan

Apprentices can receive up to $4,000 in interest-free loans for each period of technical training through the Canada Apprentice Loan. The funding can be used to cover the costs of tuition, tools, equipment, and living expenses while completing an apprenticeship in a designated Red Seal trade.

Student Aid

Apprentices can apply for Alberta student aid to cover the costs of tuition, supplies, and living expenses while enrolled at NAIT.

Scholarships and Bursaries

NAIT offers support to apprentices through scholarships and bursaries that you can apply for through your MyNAIT portal. The Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry (AIT) Training Board awards more than 1900 scholarships to eligible apprentices and occupational trainees each year.

Employment Insurance

Apply online at Service Canada as soon as you stop working to be considered for Employment Insurance (EI) Benefits. An apprentice reference code will be required by EI to continue your eligibility while in school. The apprenticeship reference code for students is on your enrolment letter from AIT on your MyTradesecrets Profile. Apprentices can call 1-800-248-4823 (in Alberta) or visit Service Canada.

Women Leading and Building Canada's Future

In partnership with the Government of Canada’s Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy – Women in Skilled Trades, NAIT's Women Leading and Building Canada's Future grant  aims to support more women-identifying individuals pursuing a career in the Red Seal skilled trades with financial support to reduce barriers to attend apprenticeship training.

Third Party Sponsorship

If your education is funded by a sponsor other than Provincial Aid or Alberta Works, you will need to follow the Sponsored Students process as noted under NAIT payment options.

Coal and Electricity Transition Tuition Voucher

If you worked in the coal-fired electricity industry and were laid off due to the phase-out, you may be eligible for the Coal and Electricity Transition Tuition Voucher program. If you have a voucher and wish to attend NAIT, please book an appointment with an Advisor in the Student Service Centre (CAT180) to discuss the process.
