Exceptional Tuition Increases: 2026/27 Academic Year
NAIT is committed to being transparent about tuition and the factors that shape it. This section explains what an Exceptional Tuition Increase (ETI) is, which programs are affected for the 2026/27 academic year, and what this means for you.
What is an Exceptional Tuition Increase?
In Alberta, tuition at publicly funded post-secondary institutions is regulated by the Government of Alberta. Each year, institutions like NAIT can apply for a standard tuition increase. In some cases, a program may require an investment beyond the standard increase. This is known as an Exceptional Tuition Increase (ETI).
What will an Exceptional Tuition Increase fund?
An ETI is not a blanket increase across all programs. It is a program-specific adjustment that must be formally proposed, reviewed through student consultation, and approved by the Government of Alberta before it can take effect for domestic students.
Any additional revenue generated through an ETI is reinvested directly into the program it supports. This includes upgrades to equipment, enhanced labs, improved learning experiences, or student financial support.
Programs Seeing an Increase in 2026/27
The following programs have received ETI approval for the 2026/27 academic year. These tuition rates only apply to domestic student tuition for students beginning a program in Fall 2026 or later in the academic year:
I am already a student in an affected program. What does this mean for me?
This increase does not apply to you. As a continuing student, your tuition rate is protected based on your admission date. For example, if you are enrolled in a program that began in Fall 2025, you will continue paying your previous 2025-26 tuition for the 2026-27 academic year. Note: If you withdraw from the program and are later re-admitted, the tuition rate in effect at the time of your re-admission will apply.
I have applied to an affected program. What does this mean for me?
- If you have accepted an offer to one of these programs, the new tuition rates will apply to your studies beginning Fall 2026. We encourage you to review the rates for your specific program and reach out if you have questions about your enrolment options.
- If you have received an offer but have not accepted yet, we want you to have all the information you need before you decide. You can find updated tuition rates for your program under the Tuition and Fees tab on your program page. If you have questions, our Student Service Centre is here to help.
- If you are an applicant and have not received an offer yet, the rates listed above apply to the 2026/27 academic year. You can review full tuition details on our Domestic Tuition and Fees page at any time.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my program tuition increasing beyond the standard rate?
Some programs require significant investment to maintain the quality and currency of equipment, facilities, and learning experiences. When the standard annual increase is insufficient to support those needs, NAIT can apply for an ETI through the Government of Alberta's regulated process. The ETI is specific to your program, and the revenue stays in your program.
Who approves an ETI?
ETIs must be approved by NAIT’s Board of Governors and the Government of Alberta. NAIT cannot implement a program-specific increase above the standard cap without that approval. Student consultation is also required.
Were students consulted?
Yes. NAIT consults with students annually as part of its budget planning process, and NAITSA executives are involved in those conversations. Consultation is a required step before any ETI proposal is submitted to the Government of Alberta.
What will the increase actually fund?
Revenue from ETIs is reinvested directly into the program. This may include updated lab equipment, modernized facilities, enhanced student supports, or expanded learning opportunities.
I am a continuing student in an affected program — do I have to pay the new rate?
No. As long as you are enrolled in your program, your tuition rate remains the same for 2026-27 academic year, based on your admission date. If you withdraw from the program and are later re-admitted, updated tuition rates will apply.
