English as a Second Language (ESL)

NAIT offers conditional admission to students currently enrolled in ESL level 4, 5, or 6. ESL level 6 must be completed before the start of the program to gain full admission.

This pathway is for ESL students who do not yet meet the English Language Proficiency (ELP) needed for NAIT’s credit or International Professional Development Certificate (IPDC) programs. While you work towards completing Level 6 ESL to meet the ELP requirement, you can also save a spot in your future credit or IPDC program.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this pathway, you must:

  1. Meet all the credit or IPDC program’s entrance requirements, other than ELP.
  2. Be enrolled in NAIT's ESL level 4, 5, or 6 courses, with enough time to finish level 6 before the start of the credit or IPDC program.

How to apply

  1. Apply to ESL, pay the ESL deposit and enrol in classes
    • You may be required to take an ESL placement test. Contact esl@nait.ca for more information
  2. Apply to your NAIT credit program of choice or IPDC program. Make sure you have enough time to finish ESL level 6 before the start of the term you apply for
  3. Monitor your MyNAIT portal for information about your application status and outstanding requirements

  4. If you meet requirements and there is a seat available, you will be conditionally admitted, pending completion of ESL level 6

Failure to complete ESL level 6

If you are unable to complete ESL level 6 before the start of the credit or IPDC program, your program application will be cancelled and any tuition deposit paid to reserve your seat will not be refunded to you.

Business Administration Applicants

Business Administration program applicants are eligible for provisional admission, rather than conditional admission. This means you can complete your ESL requirements while completing your first year of the Business Administration program. Learn the difference between conditional and provisional admission.

Deferral

If you encounter an unexpected circumstance that impacts your ability to complete ESL or begin your credit or IPDC program, you may be eligible for an Admission Deferral. This will allow you to delay the start of your program. For more details about credit or IPDC program eligibility and how to apply, please visit the following pages: Admission Deferral or IPDC Deferral
