Think outside the box

Calling all NAIT students from every program and field of study! Here’s your chance to tackle real-world problems with bold, creative solutions. Once you sign up for the Innovation Challenge, the problem will be revealed when registration closes. Then it’s your turn to shine. Work solo or in a team of up to three, and create an engaging video presentation showcasing your solution for a chance to win a cash prize.

This is more than a competition. It’s an opportunity to collaborate, think creatively, and sharpen your problem-solving skills. Your ideas have the power to make an impact. Bring your curiosity, your creativity, and your energy. Let’s see what you can create!

How does it work?

1. Sign-up! Register by Thursday, January 22 at 11:59 PM MST. Take on the challenge solo or create a team of up to three.

Register for the Innovation Challenge

2. Find out the Challenge! You'll receive an email on Friday, January 23 with the problem you are tasked to solve.

3. Innovate! Develop a unique solution to the problem and submit a 3-minute video by Friday, February 6 at 11:59 PM MST.

4. Practice your Pitch! Finalists will pitch their solution to a live audience and judges on Tuesday, February 24.

5. Win cash prizes! Winners earn can earn prize money up to $1,500 cash.

Innovation Challenge Rules: 

Team Composition 

  1. You can join solo or in a team of up to a maximum of 3 students

  2. All competitors must be current full-time NAIT students 

  3. Teams may be comprised of students from any one NAIT School or combination of Schools 

Video Production and Submission 

  1. Participants must refrain from any illegal activity in obtaining quantities of the Challenge “item” or in any aspect of producing their video submissions. 

  2. Video submissions that exceed 3 minutes and 30 seconds will be disqualified. 

  3. Any videos with content that is offensive, lewd, or in otherwise poor taste will be disqualified. 

  4. By submitting their videos, teams acknowledge that their videos may be viewed by the public and may be used for promotional purposes by NAIT. 

  5. Videos must be in MP4 format and smaller than 300 MB. 

  6. Any participant may only submit once per year. 

Final Video Showing and Awards 

  1. Video submissions will be evaluated based on the published scoring sheet. 

  2. The value or impact of the innovation as presented may be economic, environmental, social, operational, entertainment, etc., or any combination of these. 

  3. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for best overall submissions as decided by our judges.  

  4. Proof of NAIT enrollment may be required to obtain prize money.

Judges will score Innovation Challenge submissions using the following rubric:

Innovative Idea: (rated out of 5) 

  • Novelty: Is this something new or have you heard of this idea before?  
  • Feasibility: Are the next steps of the idea clear and realistic? 
  • Impact: Is the impact of the idea clearly communicated?

Pitch Content: (rated out of 5)

  • Complete story: Does the pitch contain problem-solution fit? 
  • Research: Is the problem-solution supported by secondary research and primary research? 
  • Viability: Is the idea sustainable over time? 

Performance: (rated out of 5)

  • Delivery: Was the delivery of the pitch polished, professional, clear and engaging? 
  • Pitch Deck: Was the pitch deck well designed and supported the speaker’s pitch?
