Course Overview

In this course we will install Linux and discuss the various options available to you. In this course we will install Linux and discuss the various options available to you. While we are installing we will demonstrate partitioning, software selection and more. We will also explain and demonstrate the use of live DVDs or distributions. Topics include:

  • choosing an operating system
  • installing Linux
  • partitioning
  • Software management tools, apt and rpm
  • Discuss apt-get, aptitude, zypper and yum
  • archiving using Tar and Zip
  • maintaining skeleton directories, profiles and other settings
  • setting up limits
  • servers vs. desktops vs. virtual machines
  • file system types
  • boot up scripts
  • System V init, rc and systemd
  • run levels – graphical vs. text
  • journalctl
  • basic user and group management
  • time, timezone and Network Time Protocol (NTP)
