New Media and Information Technology Programs

Shaping the next era of media & IT

NAIT is constantly evolving to ensure our programs meet the ever-changing demands of learners and the industry. Our Digital Media and IT (DMIT) program continues to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in today's economy.

To provide clearer options for students and to connect graduates more effectively with employers, we are transforming our DMIT program: instead of one program with nine concentrations, we are introducing six new, specialized programs.

This change, guided by feedback from students, industry partners and academic staff, is designed to offer students clearer pathways to their future careers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the change and why is it happening?

NAIT continues to look for the best ways we can evolve our programs to ensure that we are responding to the changing needs of learners and industry.  The Digital Media and IT (DMIT) programs continue to provide learners with the skills and training they need to be successful in our ever-changing economy.

This evolution will allow us to provide more accurate descriptions of the programs to applicants, improve clarity in career paths for graduates, and offer clarity to industry about the specific skills our graduates possess.

Consultation with school leadership, DMIT students, NAITSA, NAIT academic council and industry partners have informed this evolution, and we strongly believe this aligns students to clearer pathways for their future careers.

When will the change happen?

The new programs will begin accepting applications on August 1, 2024 (for international students) and October 1, 2024 (for domestic students) to begin classes Fall 2025.

What does this mean for current students already enrolled in the existing DMIT program?

NAIT is committed to supporting DMIT students and we will continue to offer the current DMIT courses for the next four years. Students will have until June 30, 2029 to complete their program.

Students are encouraged to remain in contact with their instructors and program leaders to ensure they meet the requirements for graduation.

I am a current DMIT student/newly enrolled student. Will I be expected to transfer into one of the new programs? What if I want to stay in my current program and complete it?

Our current DMIT program continues to offer a valuable credential with exciting career opportunities. You will not be required to transfer into one of the new programs. Current students have until June 30, 2029, to complete their courses and graduate. Rest assured, you will be fully supported by the program throughout your educational journey.

What resources are available if I have questions or want to transfer to the new programs?

Students will have to apply to the new programs, as there are different entrance requirements. They can contact program leaders for more information. A new application fee and different tuition rates will apply.

Does this mean our class sizes will increase? How will this impact my learning experience?

We don’t anticipate major changes to class sizes; some electives or options may be reduced starting in 2027, as students graduate and student numbers become smaller.

Will I have to retake the courses I already took since they’re under a different name going forward?

Some former DMIT courses may transfer to some of the new programs. This is an internal transfer of equivalent courses. Students are required to contact the program for their specific learning pathway. Different entrance requirements and tuition will apply.

Will I still have the same skills if I completed the previous DMIT streams, compared to the new programs? Will this diploma still be worth the same to potential employers?

Absolutely. Our DMIT program has a longstanding reputation for excellence, known for its industry-aligned curriculum and hands-on learning approach. Graduates of the DMIT program are highly sought after, and the skills and knowledge gained in DMIT will fully support you on your career path.

How do the new programs differ from the old program in terms of curriculum?

The programs are continuously updated for new curriculum and content. This evolution builds on the strong foundation of content from the previous concentrations. There may be some cases when the content will be more specific.

When will a potential course list be made available, so we can get an idea of if the new programs would be beneficial to us?

The new course list is available on nait.ca.

Can I still apply to the current DMIT program?

Yes. The current DMIT program will be accepting applications until May 2025. We encourage you to explore your options and review upcoming dates and deadlines, as each concentration within DMIT may have different intakes, deadlines and program availability.

Will there be any info sessions or open houses to learn more about the new programs?

Yes, NAIT will be hosting an Open House on Saturday, October 26, where you can learn about all NAIT programs, including these six new ones.

Will there be a major change in tuition for the new programs?

The 2025/26 tuition rates for these new diploma programs will be higher than previous academic years. International rates for 2025/26 are currently posted, and domestic rates will be posted in mid-March 2025.

NAIT sets tuition through a combination of several important factors, including the cost of program delivery and the demand for our limited number of available seats.

NAIT has explored options to keep the tuition as affordable as possible, and this tuition reflects the economic reality needed for NAIT to make these programs financially sustainable. These rates will allow NAIT to continue to provide the high-quality educational experience that helps our students succeed in their careers.
