Student Admissions and Enrolment - Vaccine Policy FAQs

Starting Monday, Nov. 8, everyone coming to NAIT campuses will need to be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination or compliance with an approved accommodation.

Information about accommodations can be found at nait.ca/vaccineaccommodation

We understand students who do not intend to be fully vaccinated by Monday, Nov. 8 or who do not want to provide proof of vaccination may consider withdrawing from their classes.

Frequently asked questions about these topics are answered below, and you can find additional information about the COVID-19 vaccine at nait.ca/vaccine. Information for international students can be found on the International Student COVID-19 FAQ page.

Fall 2021 students

I no longer want to attend NAIT after the vaccination requirement was announced. How do I withdraw and get a refund?

You can use the  Course Withdrawal Form  to withdrawal from your in-person classes and any online co-requisite courses or submit a  Program Withdrawal Form  to withdrawal from your program. Please indicate that you are requesting a withdrawal for medical – COVID-19 reasons. As the drop deadline has passed, you will not be provided a refund and this withdrawal will be recorded on your academic record.

Will I be withdrawn from my classes if I do not meet the vaccination requirement?

Yes, you will be withdrawn from any in-person or blended classes  in fall and any other co-requisite courses if you do not meet the vaccination requirement by November 8.

For more information on vaccination deadlines or how to upload your proof of immunization, visit nait.ca/vaccine.

Can I still attend classes in-person after Monday, Nov. 8 if I do not meet the vaccination requirement?

No, you cannot as everyone coming to campus after this date must meet the vaccination requirement.

Will adjustments be made for face-to-face course components to be delivered off campus?

Students in degree, diploma, certificate, and apprenticeship programs are not able to shift to an online course delivery. Continuing Education students should contact continuingeducation@nait.ca to determine if online options are available.

If my courses are entirely online, does the vaccination requirement apply to me?

No, if all your courses are online and you do not need to access campus for any other purpose, you are not required to provide proof of vaccination.

Can I switch any in-person classes to online classes?

Students in degree, diploma, and certificate programs are not able to shift to an online course delivery. Continuing Education students should contact continuingeducation@nait.ca to determine if online options are available.

How can I re-enter my program if I am withdrawn for not meeting the vaccination requirement?

If you have not successfully completed at least 1 term of study in your program, you will need to apply to the program again and will be subject to the admissions process.

If you have successfully completed at least 1 term of study in your program before you withdrew, you can request a re-admit. The Program Re-admit request must be approved by the program chair and is subject to availability. The Re-admit fee of $100 will apply.

If my accommodation request is not approved and I am not vaccinated, how do I withdrawal?

If you go through NAIT’s accommodation process and your request did not get approved, please submit a course withdrawal form or program withdrawal form. Please select that you are requesting a withdrawal for medical – COVID-19 reasons and indicate in the notes section that your accommodation request was not approved. NAIT will verify that your accommodation request was not granted.

If verified, you will be provided a refund for any applicable tuition and fees for courses in the fall term and your student record will not be negatively impacted.

Are there any programs I can apply to which do not require a vaccination?

If your program is completely online, you do not need to provide proof of vaccination. However, if at any point, or for any reason, you are required to attend any NAIT campus, you will need to meet NAIT’s vaccine mandate.

Apprentice students

I no longer want to take the one or more classes I’ve enrolled in at NAIT after the vaccination requirement was announced. Can I get a refund?

If you’re an Apprentice student and need more time to meet the vaccination requirement, you can transfer to a later date if there is availability. The administrative fee for the transfer will be waived.

If not, you can drop the class using the Course Withdrawal Form. Please note the following timelines:

  • If your on campus classes have already started, you will not receive a refund if you withdraw.
  • If your on campus classes have not started yet, you can withdrawal and receive a full refund, less the administrative fee, until the day prior to the start of class.

Can I switch any in-person classes to online classes?

Apprenticeship students are not able to shift to an online course delivery.

If I am currently enrolled in apprenticeship courses that go beyond Nov.8, will my student record with AIT be impacted if I withdraw or drop my classes?

Since the drop deadline has passed, you can submit a completed Course Withdrawal form. However you will not receive a refund and your student record may be impacted.

As an apprentice, if I am enrolled in on campus classes after Nov.8, can I still attend classes if I do not meet the vaccination requirement?

No, you will not be permitted on campus as you must provide proof of vaccination or compliance with an approved accommodation starting November 8. In this case, since you do not meet the vaccine requirement, you will be withdrawn from any in-person classes in fall and any other co-requisite courses.

If I start my apprentice program in January, when do I need to meet the vaccine requirements?

Apprentices, with the exception of those in the Parts Technician program which is completely online, must be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination through NAIT Alert four weeks prior to the start of your apprenticeship program.

Visit nait.ca/vaccine for step-by-step directions for how to provide proof of vaccination and for vaccine FAQs.

Student aid and awards

Alberta student aid

I received funding from Alberta Student Aid but now I want to withdraw or drop classes to pursue part-time study. Do I need to repay my loan?

The Alberta Student Aid funding guide shares that students who withdraw from their program or drop to part-time studies will have their eligibility re-assessed. They will then need to start repaying their loan 6 months after their last date of full-time study. Any future loan disbursements will be cancelled.

I received grant funding from Alberta Student Aid/Canada Student Financial Assistant Program. Do I have to repay my grants?

As noted in the Alberta Student Aid funding guide, students who withdraw from their program or drop to part-time will have their grant eligibility re-assessed. If this is done within 30 days of the start of the semester, students will have their grant converted to loan. The loan will need to be repaid when the student enters their repayment period, 6 months after their last date of full-time study.

I received funding from Alberta Student Aid for the Fall 2021 semester but now I want to withdraw due to the vaccine mandate. Can I use my funding for a future term?

No. Funding for the current year will be cancelled. Students will need to reapply for funding if they choose to return to post-secondary. Please be aware that if a student has a history of withdrawals, they may be denied by Alberta Student Aid and may choose to appeal the decision at that time.

Who can I talk to about what will happen to my student aid?

Students who would like to discuss their student loan account and options for repayment can contact the Alberta Student Aid Service Centre at 1-855-606-2096.

I paid my tuition using student aid. Will this be refunded to me?

Students who drop to part-time studies or withdraw from their program and are eligible for a refund will have their tuition payment refunded to Alberta Student Aid and/or Canada Student Financial Assistance Program.

Canada apprentice loan

I received funding from the Canada Apprentice Loan Program but I will be withdrawing from my program due to the vaccine mandate. What will happen to my funding?

According to Canada Apprentice Loans, confirmed loans will count as one of your 5 eligible periods of technical training. Canada Apprentice Loans not already confirmed will be cancelled.

Scholarships and awards

I qualified for scholarships, such as the Alexander Rutherford or Jason Lang, but I will be withdrawing or dropping classes to be a part-time student. Am I still eligible for my scholarships?

No. Students must be enrolled full-time in the current semester to qualify for scholarships.

Alberta Works

I’m funded by Alberta Works. Do I need to be concerned about my funding?

Alberta Works funded students should contact continuing education at continuingeducation@nait.ca to determine if online options are available so their student funding is not impacted. Students who are unable to shift into online courses should contact financialaid@nait.ca for further information.
