  • Degree - NAIT offers a number of business degrees and applied science and technology degrees accredited by Alberta Advanced Education.
    Applied degree programs offer a stronger emphasis on practical applications of the concepts learned in the classroom
  • Diplomas & Certificates - These credit programs take 1 or 2 years and lead to government approved and industry-recognized credentials.
  • Journeyman Certificate - Hands-on and expert-led apprenticeship and industry training for skilled trades and technology professionals.
  • Continuing Education/Non-Credit - NAIT offers a wide range of non-credit programs and courses for personal and professional development in a number of interesting and exciting fields. These options are great for people who may be working but are interested in studying as well.

Delivery Options

The flexible schedule options for this course including time of day and full/part-time.

  • Day - Courses taking place between Monday - Friday, before 5 PM.
  • Evening/Weekend - Courses taking place on weekdays from 5 PM or later, or Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Online - Sometimes called "Home Study" or "Computer-Based Learning"
  • Distance - Traditional correspondence format. These courses work best if you can't get to a campus or if your schedule can't accommodate fixed class times

Advanced Credit

You may apply for advanced credit once you have been accepted into the program. Advanced Credit can be Transfer Credit (for completed post-secondary courses) or PLAR (Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition).

Transfer Credit

In addition to the common guidelines outlined on the Transfer and Credit Options section and on the Transfer Credit Request Form (PDF), your program has other advanced credit requirements that are applied to each request including:

  • You must have completed the course or program no more than 10 year(s) ago unless a formalized articulation agreement is in place
  • You must have a minimum mark of 2.0 GPA in the course(s) or program

Prior Learning and Assessment Recognition (PLAR)

If you do not qualify for transfer credit or credential recognition, Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) may be an option.

Take your accounting diploma to the next level with NAIT’s Advanced Accounting Certificate program, a post-diploma certificate targeted to Accounting Diploma grads seeking a challenging and rewarding career in accounting and finance.

Our accelerated program is geared for you to pursue accreditation in specialized accounting practices. By upgrading your accounting skills, you’ll be well suited for positions in the accounting and finance functions of industry, public practice, and government and not-for-profit organizations.

Hands-on learning

You will be immersed in a combination of classroom instruction, industry relevant case work, simulations and networking. You will develop an understanding of modern business dynamics and learn to work well within culturally diverse organizations.

Classroom & study hours

On average, you can expect to spend:

  • 20 hours per week attending classes over the course of each semester
  • an additional 20-30 hours per week studying, completing assignments, doing research, reading, etc.

If you require additional flexibility, this program can be completed on a part-time basis.

As a graduate of the NAIT advanced accounting certificate, your course credits can be applied to the CPA Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF) as well as a number of business degrees in Alberta, including the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) – Accounting emphasis at NAIT.

As a certificate graduate, you’ll further your knowledge and skills in professional roles and be able to apply your learning to mid-to-senior level positions. Employers such as government, industry, accounting firms, banks, hospitals and consulting firms are common sectors where our graduates find work.

After graduation

NAIT’s Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) builds on your accounting diploma, allowing you to earn a degree with just 60 more credits of study. It will also prepare you for the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) Professional Education Program as well as the CPA Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF) national certification exam.

You will have a strong accounting foundation, the ability to communicate, problem solve and use software applications common to careers in accounting. Our focus is on analysis and interpretation of financial information to make sound financial, control, and ethical decisions.
