Hands-on, industry-relevant skills

The Wireless Systems Engineering Technology program at NAIT provides the building blocks necessary to begin your career in the technical world of wireless systems.

The program is broken into 4 sections:

  1. Introductory and advanced communications theory - fundamental wireless technology and architecture, network fundamentals, signal spectrum, and communication techniques and theory
  2. Communications infrastructure and transport media - infrastructure of communications systems, methods of communication systems transmission, site planning, and building wiring
  3. Enterprise (business infrastructure) and industrial communications systems (industrial applications) - broadband wireless technologies, enterprise data communications systems, land mobile concepts, wireless communication systems for industrial applications and personal communication technologies
  4. Systems and business management and final research project – includes oral presentation, written communications, interpersonal and teamwork skills, analytical thinking and problem solving

Classroom & Study Hours

This 2-year diploma program consists of four 15-week semesters. You’ll benefit from:

You can expect to spend, on average:

  • 27 hours per week attending classes over the course of a semester

Courses in the Wireless Systems Engineering Technology program take place in both traditional lecture and laboratory settings. Labs are equipped with test equipment, computers and commercial systems used in the information and communications technology industry.

This course introduces the student to semiconductor components and the various instrumentation used in studying communication signals. This course introduces the student to OSI and TCP/IP models, IP addressing, protocols and standards used in personal area networks (PAN), in-building data communication systems, enterprise communication systems and industrial wireless communication systems.

In order to compete with the bandwidth of wired media, a wireless system must ensure spectral efficiency and quality of information. Today’s wireless applications are incorporating fibre optic technology in order to meet bandwidth demands of users. Wireless applications such as fibre-to-the-antenna, fibre-to-the-cell-site, and fibre cable in distributed antenna systems all require the Wireless Systems Engineering Technologist to have a fundamental knowledge of optical transmission. This course introduces the student to optical transmission media, compares the characteristics and impediments of copper, optical and free space transmission, analyzes the characteristics and properties of an optical transceiver, and allows the student to assemble and verify the operation of optical cables and devices.

This course introduces the Wireless Systems Engineering Technologist to the applications and capabilities of land mobile communication systems, propagation modeling, and impairments of a narrowband wireless channel. Students perform frequency planning, system design, configuration, and testing of land mobile communication systems.

Advancement in technology, access to new frequencies, and consumer demand has transformed what was historically a narrowband wireless link into a broadband wireless communication system. This course introduces the student to channel modeling, channel impairments specific to broadband wireless transmission, channel capacity, spectral efficiency and applications of broadband communication systems. Students use appropriate tools to design, configure and test fixed broadband wireless communication systems such as point-to-point microwave and satellite.

Once strictly voice-centric circuit switched architecture, advancement in technologies and protocols has quickly transformed the traditional cellular network into a data-centric IP based architecture providing voice, video, and data capability to its users. This course introduces the student to the historical evolution of cellular networks, the main functional components of cellular systems, operation and performance of multiple access techniques used in analog and digital cellular communication systems and ongoing developments in cellular systems and technologies. Students will analyze the performance of cellular system designs and techniques and create a frequency plan for a cellular system.

In order to plan the facilities infrastructure for a wireless site, the Wireless Systems Engineering Technologists must have a fundamental knowledge of AC and DC power systems, electrical protection, heating ventilation and air conditioning, physical security, alarming and surveillance, standards, codes and regulations. This course prepares the student to develop a site plan based on environmental factors and technical requirements; prepare a facilities plan based on physical requirements; evaluate site compliance based on industry standards, codes, regulations, and bylaws; identify sources of noise and interference, and write a maintenance procedure.

The capstone experience provides the student with an opportunity to synthesize a number of the course level outcomes and apply Applied Research and Project Management principles to an applied research based or non-research (project based) capstone project. Frank Bochek is a retired electronics technician who was born and raised in the coal-mining town Sterco, in the foothills of Alberta. His innate curiosity and fascination of how things work make him the ultimate science guy, with a particular passion for computers and electronics. He was the owner/operator of “Frank’s Radio Clinic” in his early career, and was later responsible for small engine and electrical repairs as well as the installation and maintenance of computers in the Yellowhead School Division – including the original Commodore 64. Bob and Wendy have established this bursary in order to support students who are experiencing financial difficulties so they can devote their time to their studies in order to embark on a good career. Available to a second year student enrolled in any full time credit program in either the JR Shaw School of Business, or the School of Applied Sciences and Technology at NAIT. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and a minimum academic achievement of 75% in the first year of their program at NAIT.

Criteria:
Available to first and second year female students enrolled in any engineering technology program at NAIT. Awarded on the basis of satisfactory academic achievement in the previous semester of the program and demonstrated financial need.
