BIOL2442 - Advanced Topics in Molecular Biology

This course will build on concepts learned in BIOL2339 and BIOL2336. Students will apply cell culture techniques to elicit changes in gene expression using cell lines. These changes will then be monitored at several levels such as the transcriptome, proteome and enzymatic activity levels. To measure the various stages of expression, students will learn methods such as quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), Western blotting and zymography. Systems for gene knockdown and knockout are examined, including RNA interference (RNAi) to knockdown protein expression, and DNA editing using CRISPR/Cas9.
This course is available to students in the Biological Sciences Technology - Laboratory and Research program. Prerequisites: BIOL2336, BIOL2339.
