Apprentice gasfitters will be taught to follow codes, regulations and accepted safety practices to

  • install and repair underground gas mains and distribution pipes
  • respond to calls about escaping gas
  • assist in the investigation of gas fires and explosions
  • convert appliances to use other fuels (for example, propane or natural gas)

NAIT is the largest pipe trades training facility in Alberta, with the capacity to train 2,000 apprentices per year. Our staff carry 3 trade tickets (generally, Plumber, 1st Class Gasfitter, Steamfitter/Pipefitter) along with a minimum of 10 years trade experience.

Entrance Requirements

Academic Requirements

  • Recommended Path - Alberta High School Diploma with: English 30-2, Math 30-3, Physics 20 or Chemistry 20 or Science 20.
  • Minimum Requirements - Successful completion of: English 20-2, Math 20-3, Science 10 or Entrance Exam.

Non-Academic Requirements

You must currently be employed in the trade. If you are not, you must first find an employer willing to hire an apprentice, then contact Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training to become a registered apprentice.

PPE Requirements: Approved safety glasses, where prescription safety glasses are worn sideshields must be added or safety glasses over perscription glasses. CSA (green triangle) approved footwear. Gloves for hot work. Coveralls suitable for hot work (flame/spark resistant material, forearms and shoulders covered).

Available to a graduating student who has completed Apprenticeship training within the propane industry, e.g. Pipefitter, Gasfitter, and who has achieved top marks.

Orvil L. Davie Memorial Fund$1000 0

Number: Varies. Available to first and second year students enrolled in a program of study leading to a career in the HVAC industry. Apprentices are also eligible providing they are enrolled in programs directly related to the HVAC industry, e.g. Sheet Metal, Gas Fitter, Refrigeration, etc. Awarded on the basis of financial need. A letter from the applicant outlining the interest and reasons for seeking a career in the HVAC industry must accompany the application.

Northlands Park - GAS Spring$250 1

Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to a graduating student of the Gasfitter Apprenticeship program. Preference will be given to Alberta residents.

Northway Pontiac Buick GMC Ltd. Apprenticeship Award$1000 2

Available to an apprenticeship student attending NAIT in any apprenticeship program who is from Redwater High School and who is in the RAP program.

Shell Canada Trades Bursaries - Intake I$500 5

Available for students in any year of their Apprenticeship program in the following apprenticeship programs: Electrician, Gasfitter, Gas Utility Operator, Heavy Equipment Technician, Instrument Technician, Millwright, Steamfitter/Pipefitter, Rig Technician, and Welder. Awarded on the basis of satisfactory academic achievement while a student at NAIT and demonstrated financial need. Students of Aboriginal descent, immigrants to Canada, and women will be strongly considered.

Available to apprenticeship students in their second year of the Boilermaker, Crane & Hoisting Equipment Operator, Gasfitter, Heavy Equipment Technician, Instrument Technician, Machinist, Millwright, Steamfitter/Pipefitter, Structural Steel & Plate Fitter, or Welder Apprenticeship programs. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement in their second year in both their NAIT and Provincial exams.
