This course will give the student a global perspective of the impacts that hydrocarbon resources have on societies, economies, and the environment. The strategic role that fossil fuels have played in major social, economic and military events in the 20th and 21st century will be covered. This course also includes an examination of the social, cultural, and economic impacts of current and future hydrocarbon exploration and production activities in developed and underdeveloped regions of the world. The energy industry is undergoing unprecedented change that includes a greater adoption of alternative energy sources. The socio-economic and environmental impacts associated with the development of alternative energy sources will be explored. Students will use and enhance research and critical thinking skills to expand their understanding of the global energy industry. Group discussion and debate will be used to enhance the learning process.
