This course is divided into three complementary sections. The first portion of the course addresses wilderness survival in remote unsupported settings. Particular focus is directed towards a two-day, overnight survival camp exercise where theoretical skills are assessed in a controlled field setting. The second portion of this course focuses on gas-powered sampling devices and transportation equipment. Attention is directed towards pre-use inspections, troubleshooting and maintaining two- and four-cycle motors specific to remote field work using ATV’s, snowmobiles, boats and various gas-powered field implements (chainsaws, brush saws, augers, and generators). Additionally, operation and loading of trailers as well as off road specific equipment is stressed (tire chain use, trailer hitching, and winching). The third portion of the course brings together all other aspects in a week long fisheries field assessment. Additional skills revolving around fisheries animal handling, FWMIS form entry, whirling disease protocols, electrofishing, passive capture methods and riparian and benthic habitat assessment are addressed.
