In this course students will demonstrate the fundamentals of geologic field mapping during a one week field school. Students will observe, measure, and record field data from outcrops of structurally complex Paleozoic strata in the Rocky Mountains in order to produce a geological map. In the classroom portion of this course, students practice a variety of wellsite evaluation techniques and generate a lithologic strip log. Students will also identify the principal components of the surficial geology of the Edmonton region. Students will perform grain size and plasticity index tests on soils, perform soil classification, calculate mass-volume quantities and conduct and apply compaction control tests.
