This course provides students with an understanding of two types of third party intervention; arbitration and mediation. Arbitration and mediation can be used to resolve a variety of disputes, for example construction, labour, business, consumer or other contract disputes. Relationship conflicts that affect other aspects of life will also be addressed. Types of arbitration and mediation will be examined including the process and skills used in each type of intervention. Students will use role plays, simulations and exercises to experience being in the role of a mediator and arbitrator, and will also experience being a party in a dispute. Writing an arbitration decision and facilitating a resolution in mediation will also be included in this course.
