Engineering Materials

MATE1104

  • Requisites: This course is available to students in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program.
  • Course Equivalencies: MATE1204, MET221
  • Open Studies: Not Available
  • Credits: 3.00

Material selection is an important aspect to engineering design. The physical and mechanical properties of engineering materials are altered by composition, structure and environment. Lab exercises will include testing of materials by both destructive and nondestructive methods to ensure that the materials used in an engineering design conform to the required material specifications. Material performance in industrial environments can be affected by a variety of corrosion mechanisms. The study of the evaluation methods used for corrosive environments will help student gain a level of knowledge in how design life of a component can vary by material selection.
