This Course provides an introduction to molecular biology with emphasis placed on molecular test methods and their application in laboratory medicine. Students will learn about the preparation of clinical specimens and test methodologies used for molecular diagnostic testing. Students will perform DNA extraction, isolation, purification and amplification through polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Laboratory sessions will also include amplicon detection, gel electrophoresis, restriction enzyme digestion, and sequencing interpretation. Basic fundamentals of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genetics (DNA transcription, translation, phenotypic expression, and genetic nomenclature) will be discussed.
