Blood group systems as they apply to the testing of blood for human transfusion will be studied. Serological techniques are used to perform pre-transfusion testing and identify antibodies. Correlation of theory with laboratory data is used to investigate transfusion reactions, hemolytic disease of the newborn and autoimmune hemolytic anemias. Blood components and their purpose in transfusion therapy will also be discussed.
