EDMONTON – NAIT has become a member of the Eclipse Foundation, joining an independent community that creates open-source software. The foundation helps cultivate both an open source community and complementary products and services to benefit software providers and end-users. All the technology and source code developed by the foundation is made available under the Eclipse Public Licence.

The foundation works with commercial developers, consumers, academic and research institutions and individual developers on open-source projects.

NAIT students and instructors in the Digital Media and IT program have been using Eclipse tools to deliver more than 600 software-based student projects over the past six years. NAIT researchers plan to continue to use Eclipse’s tools in future work in smart construction, digital manufacturing, and in their work with the Smart City Alliance as a founding partner.

QUICK FACTS

  • The Eclipse Project was originally created by IBM in 2001, supported by a consortium of software vendors.
  • The Eclipse Foundation was created in 2004 as a vendor-neutral, open and transparent community from a cross-section of the software industry.
  • The foundation is funded by annual dues from members and overseen by a board of directors.

Wade Muri, interim Director, NAIT Centre for Innovative Media
“NAIT’s Centre for Sensors and System Integration and NAIT’s Centre for Innovative Media will be using Eclipse software to provide additional value within applied research projects in energy, forestry, agriculture, manufacturing, and the environment. We feel our relationship with Eclipse is a natural fit, and an extension of the work we have already been delivering to the community.

“NAIT educates approximately 1,100 students in the Digital Media and IT programs each year. The Eclipse relationship will help equip a small army of technologists with an enormous tool set to tackle complex problems.”

Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director, Eclipse Foundation
"Seeing open source technologies from the Eclipse Foundation being used in education and research is wonderful. We are proud to see our community's development tools being used by NAIT students and faculty. Eclipse Internet of Things technologies are being used worldwide in industrial IoT solutions. Mastering these open source tools and technologies will give NAIT's students job and career opportunities as they enter the workforce.”
