Grading System

NAIT is a fully accredited post-secondary institute operating under the auspices of the Post-Secondary Learning Act, Government of Alberta, Advanced Education.

NAIT uses the Alpha Grading System on a 4.0 scale (effective July 2004). You are assigned a final letter grade when you complete a course. The grading chart relates each letter grade to its corresponding grade point value.

*For credit programs effective July 2017, satisfactory is considered as "in good standing" at a term grade point average (TGPA) of 2.0.

NAIT's official pass mark is D (50%) on the alpha grading system.

Code Explanations

H Honours to indicate superior achievement.
P Pass to indicate fully satisfactory performance.
CR Course credit awarded in accordance with advanced credit/transfer credit policy.
IP In progress
CTN  Continued – Course was made up of two parts (A + B) with the final grade and credits for both parts being recorded on part B.
AU Course was audited. No credit is given.
IN Incomplete
W Withdraw – Student officially withdrew from the course prior to the prescribed deadline. No credit earned. Not calculated in GPA.
WF Withdraw with Failure – Student withdrew from the course after the prescribed deadline. No credit earned. Calculated as a failing grade in GPA.

Transcripts from other post secondary institutions

If a transcript using an Alpha Grading System is submitted from another educational institution, NAIT will award the average percentage that coincides with the Letter Grade, eg., A+ would be given 95%.
