How to Apply

If you’re interested in NAIT’s semester abroad programs or summer programs, follow the steps below to apply. Make sure to check the study abroad opportunities page to learn about application deadlines.

The Faculty-Led Field School programs will not follow the application steps below. Please reach out to your program area directly for next steps.

Exploration

Explore NAIT’s  education abroad opportunities and learn about general eligibility requirements

Check your Academic Progress Report on mynait.ca to plan your course schedule, factoring in spending time abroad

Think about your finances for your trip abroad, and check the available funding for students

Complete your Study Abroad Application

Complete the Education Abroad Online Application, including the following:

  • Letter of Intent: 500 words explaining how your study abroad experience will benefit you academically, professionally and interculturally
  • Unofficial transcript: access your transcript through the myNAIT portal self-service
  • Two letters of reference: one of these reference letters will be from your instructor
  • Application form: find the form on myNAIT portal

Meet with your program area

Meet with a School Advisor or Program Leader to sign off your Study Abroad Approval Form
 

Submit your application

Send the Education Abroad Application and Education  Abroad Program Approval Form to educationabroad@nait.ca

Complete a host institution application (if applicable). The Global Engagement team will let you know if this is required and where to apply.

Apply for Student Funding (if you plan to)

Next steps

Get a confirmation email to study abroad from the Global Engagement team

Attend a mandatory pre-departure session that includes practical travel information, risk and safety abroad, intercultural competency development, and information about whom to contact in an emergency

You are required to meet with an International Advisor to ensure your study permit will not be impacted by traveling abroad. This must take place as soon as possible in the application process.
 

  • International Advisors can be reached using the nait.ca/help web form.
  • If you are a permanent resident in Canada, we encourage you to check the Passport Index to find out if you need a Visa to visit certain countries. Please confirm the visa policies with the embassy before your travel.

Once you’ve been approved to study abroad, you can start preparing for your trip! Follow our study abroad checklist below to ensure you’ve sent off all the appropriate paperwork and you’re ready to succeed.

Before you go

Ensure you have sufficient funds for the duration of the trip

Apply for Student Funding (if eligible/applicable)

Review your travel documents (passport valid for at least 6 months)

Check for Visa requirements at Passport Index

Book accommodations

Book flights

Attend a mandatory pre-departure training session(s)

Register in Healix Oracle - travel assistance app

Ensure you have Medical Insurance Coverage (check with NAITSA or your insurance provider)
