Each NAIT student wins at least one medal, competing alongside professional chefs

EDMONTON – Culinary Team NAIT served up a remarkable win at the Hong Kong International Culinary Classic 17, with two gold medals, six silver and eight bronze. The students competed against professional chefs from around the world.

The Hong Kong International Culinary Classic was part of HOFEX 2017 – the largest food and hospitality tradeshow in the Asia-Pacific region, which ran from May 8-11. Ten NAIT Culinary program students competed, accompanied by one of their coaches and the team’s manager.

Each of the NAIT students won a medal during the four days of competition, a remarkable feat considering only about 10 per cent of participants win a medal.

The students squared off in the hot food competition, in which they have one hour to prepare and plate three entrees. Their dishes included spring chicken, beef, lamb rack, grouper and halibut.

QUICK FACTS

  • Members of NAIT’s culinary team included five first-year students and five second-year students.
  • Team members were selected in January following a cook-off competition at NAIT.
