Course Overview
Bearings are precision-made components that allow machinery to easily move at high speeds and carry heavy loads. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to describe bearing types and demonstrate bearing fits and maintenance to ensure efficient operation.
If something turns or twists there is likely a bearing in it. Bearings, which can be found in numerous applications from toys to spacecraft, must be reliable, durable and precisely manufactured. Successful students of this theory and shop-based course will be able to describe and perform precision measurement, lubrication, and shafting, and install shaft accessories as they relate to bearings.
Upon successful completion, students will be able to describe the application, installation and fitting of plain bearings as well as select and install anti-friction bearings for specified applications. Students will also be able to describe the symptoms leading to common bearing failures and perform proper lubrication to avoid them, and be able to describe shafts, fits, and shaft accessories and demonstrate use of precision measurement tools.
