Course Overview
This workshop provides six hours of theory and eight hours of practical hands-on experience in the collection of blood samples using proper techniques and universal precautions.
Skills gained in this course will allow you to describe the anatomy and physiology of the veins used for phlebotomy; explain the preparation processes for the phlebotomy procedure; describe client considerations; ensure patient safety; and ensure proper collection labeling, documentation, handling, and transportation of samples.
To enrol in this course, you should be currently or previously employed in a health care occupation such as a Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse, or medical researcher. We also welcome participants employed by a healthcare insurance company.
Please note that in this course you must be willing to serve as a patient for the hands-on component. A minimum of four real collections will be completed in this course.
Students who successfully complete this workshop may be eligible to receive certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) through the Canadian Phlebotomists Technicians Group Inc. For information on how to become certified as a CPT please visit www.mycptg.ca
