Course Overview

Shielded Metal Arc welding (SMAW) “STICK” is one of the most popular welding processes, especially in the maintenance and repair industry. Students of this course will be able to describe and demonstrate SMAW welding processes.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) or “STICK” welding is a manual welding process that uses a consumable electrode to create a weld. This welding process is used extensively in the construction of heavy steel structures and industrial fabrication. Although used primarily to weld steel and iron, other metals can be welded using this method.

Upon successful completion of this exploration course, students will be able to describe the types of arc welding machines, demonstrate machine settings, and discuss care and maintenance of welding machines. Students will also be able to describe mild steel electrodes, demonstrate joint preparation weld faults, and discuss safety considerations.
The course will include shop time to practice butt welding, flat position, lap welding, flat, overhead, vertical, and arc-air gouging skills.

  • Remote Live Delivery: Where: Online with instructor. When: Course is scheduled at a specific time for students to attend. Instruction is delivered at set times online. Students do not come to campus.
