Shawna Bruce is a self-identified "Master of Disaster" (RRU MA DEM) and seasoned strategic communicator and trainer with 30 years of crisis communications, public information and public affairs experience. After serving in the Canadian Forces as a Public Affairs Officer (27 years) and working in the petrochemical industry as a Public Affairs Manager (8 years), Shawna started her consulting business, M.D. Bruce and Associates Ltd. in 2019. She began sharing her passion and expertise with clients in support of public information, risk and crisis communications, media relations training, emergency management, and stakeholder engagement.
In addition to consulting, Shawna is a part-time instructor for NAIT’s Disaster and Emergency Management program and supports co-instructing the Public Information Officer course as part of NAIT's Centre of Applied Disaster and Emergency Management AHIMT Academy. She also develops curriculum for delivery in postsecondary institutions and Continuing Education programs. She is actively engaged in the Covid-19 Task Force Recovery for her community of Sturgeon County, Alberta and serves as the Public Member on the Board of Directors at NR CAER - a mutual aid emergency response organization in Alberta's Industrial Heartland.
