You want to be a boilermaker. You want to work on all types of boilers, tanks and pressure vessels, performing structural and plate work on air-, steam- and liquid-tight containers.

But you need to learn more, like how to repair, test or maintain pressure vessels, or how to erect and install boilers. Maybe you want to know how to fabricate heat exchangers or fired reactors, or want some experience working on scaffolds to repair existing boilers.

Apprenticeship is a method of gaining the expertise needed to become a skilled tradesperson. This is done through a combination of on-the-job experience and classroom training.

Most apprenticeship programs are 3-4 periods in length, with an average of 8 weeks for each training period. In addition, there are specific allotments of on-the-job training hours associated with each period, so most apprentices complete 1 period per calendar year.

Hands-on, industry-relevant skills

If you enjoy working with tools, heavy equipment and machinery, have a high attention to detail for precise work and like a job with plenty of variety, then you will enjoy working as a boilermaker.

Boilermakers work in fabrication shops or heavy industrial plants. By nature of the work, you are often inside confined spaces, requiring strict safe worksite practices.

Training at NAIT

The Boilermaker apprenticeship term is:

  • 3 years (three 12-month periods)
  • minimum 1500 hours on-the-job training each year
  • 8 weeks of technical training each year

NAIT is the only institute in Alberta to provide

Enter the workforce with confidence

As a boilermaker, you will most commonly find work in metal fabricating and iron and steel construction, including shipbuilding and rail transport, as well as energy industries such as petroleum and coal, electric power and oil and gas. Boilermaker employment can fluctuate with seasonal and economic changes, especially for those working in construction.

Boilermakers are heavily involved in the construction of industrial plants, including pulp mills, mine mills, generating plants and oil and gas plants.

Once you have obtained enough on-the-job experience, some boilermakers may advance to become a supervisor or superintendent, quality control and assurance manager, site inspector or trainer.
