NAIT’s Materials Engineering Technology Program prepares students for a diverse and rewarding career in their profession. Our graduates have employment opportunities in a wide variety of industrial settings including oil and gas, chemical processing, mining, construction, pulp and paper and research and development.
A Materials Engineering Technologist is an important member of the engineering team. Our curriculum has been developed in close co-operation with industry leaders ensuring our students have relevant hands on experience and theoretical instruction. They will have a working knowledge of the properties and behavior of engineering materials in a range of environments.
A Materials Engineering Technologist’s expertise is sought after by industry for their understanding of metals, polymers, ceramics and composites. Technologists give advice in material selection, asset and integrity inspections, weld inspections and fabrication. In laboratory settings they are involved in research and development, failure analysis and material testing. Many of our Alumni have gone on to start their own successful businesses and employ our graduates.

Hands-on, industry-relevant skills
Over the 2-year, 4-semester program, you will attend labs and lectures in order to learn about the properties and behaviour of engineering materials.
You'll develop skills in:
- non-destructive and destructive testing techniques such as radiography, ultrasonic, eddy current, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle and vibration analysis
- welding metallurgy and processes like machining, casting, forging and metal-forming
- mechanical testing, corrosion testing and control techniques
- metals analysis
- heat treating and processing
You'll also gain confidence with computer software such as spreadsheets, word processors and computer-assisted drafting software.
Of course, you'll become very familiar with a wide range of materials, including metals, non-metals, ceramics, composites and plastics.

In industry, there is a continuing need for technologists with a knowledge of engineering materials and skills in design, selection, testing, quality control, materials and product certification and processing.
Materials engineering technologists find employment at competitive salaries in organizations of all sizes, and in environments ranging from offices and laboratories to the outdoors. They work in:
- materials processing (producing steel, nickel, plastics and ceramics)
- equipment manufacturing (pressure vessel design and manufacturing, oilfield equipment, mining equipment, electronics components, aircraft components, auto components)
- industrial services used by the processing industries (e.g., non-destructive inspection, corrosion testing and control, failure investigations, materials certification).
Graduates have also found employment in government, private research laboratories and technical sales careers.

You may also continue your studies after graduation by pursuing a Bachelor of Technology (BTech). Diploma grads can earn a BTech degree with just two more years of study. Full-time and part-time study options are available.
