The healthcare industry continues to see a rapid increase in the usage of advanced medical diagnostic and therapeutic equipment to provide the highest level of patient care possible. As our dependence on high-tech equipment and technical expertise required by medical professionals increases, so have the technology-related risks to patients and clinical staff.

Biomedical engineering technologist careers have evolved to help manage technology-related risks in the health-care industry through the entire lifecycle of medical devices, including specification, inspection, calibration, repair and maintenance, and technical troubleshooting.

The Biomedical Engineering Technology program will provide you with fundamental knowledge and hands-on experience with electronics, microcontroller applications, computer network systems and medical imaging systems. You'll also become familiar with medical laboratory practices, anatomy, physiology and health technology management.

Hands-on, industry-relevant training

The Biomedical Engineering Technology program will provide you with the skills of an electronic technologist with a specialized focus on biomedical equipment technology.

In your first year of study you will learn about electronics, microcontroller programming, math and computer systems. 

  • Biomedical instrumentation
  • X-ray and diagnostic imaging equipment
  • Medical laboratory instrumentation

Supplementary courses in anatomy and physiology and medical equipment management complete the medical specialization.

Biomedical Simulator

Practicum/co-op/work experience


Fourth-semester field practice placements and clinical guest lectures at hospitals in the region are integrated with a one-month practicum to provide students with a practical foundation for employment in the field. 


Students may be eligible to participate in a one semester co-op placement between their first and second year of training. Successful co-op students work in a program related, industry position and gain advanced job-readiness skills. Acceptance into co-op requires successful completion of first term coursework with a GPA of 2.3.

Enter the workforce with confidence

Most Biomedical Engineering Technology graduates begin their careers as equipment service personnel with hospitals or medical equipment companies. Whether you end up working independently or with a team of technical professionals, you'll need to be able to work and communicate with engineering and medicine professionals.

With experience, you could find yourself in a supervisory or managerial role and responsible to coordinate the activities of other technical personnel.

As an experienced biomedical technologist, you may:

  • participate in the development of departmental policies and procedures that ensure adherence to codes, laws and regulations pertaining to medical equipment
  • provide support to clinical staff, including technical troubleshooting within the clinical environment
  • participate in equipment specification, evaluation and selection
  • participate in device-related incident investigations and the reporting of these to Health Canada, the equipment manufacturer and other agencies
  • participate in planning for the installation of equipment into new health-care facilities
  • participate in planning the renovation of existing facilities to enable the installation of new equipment
  • provide technical advice and educate medical and clinical staff
  • manage clinical engineering departments

Working in hospitals

In a typical entry-level hospital position, you may be asked to provide technical quality assurance by performing installation, inspection, calibration and repair. You will need to provide high-quality service documentation for the medical equipment you support, which could include specialized equipment for X-ray based and ultrasound imaging, as well as medical laboratory and dialysis equipment. New career opportunities are developing in networking medical instrumentation with hospital information systems as well. 

Working with medical equipment companies

Medical equipment companies often hire new graduates into “Field Service Representatives in Training” positions. If you find yourself in this position, you can expect mentorship from veteran field service representatives as they travel to provide service at customer sites. As your skills and competencies develop, you may be sent to company-specific training centres to receive technical training on the equipment you’ll be expected to support. Within 2 years you may become a modality specialist who is the primary account representative for a portfolio of customers.

After graduation and required work experience, you may also be eligible for professional accreditation by these two professional associations. 

You may also continue your studies after graduation by pursuing a Bachelor of Technology (BTech). Diploma grads can earn a BTech degree with just two more years of study. Full-time and part-time study options are available.
