Medical Radiologic Technology is the art and science of correctly positioning the patient and X-ray equipment to produce and record images for the purpose of visualizing the extent of disease or injury to a patient. The majority of X-ray examinations are performed in the Diagnostic Imaging Department; however, they are also carried out in the operating room, in the emergency department, on wards and in specialized intensive care units.

The Medical Radiologic Technology program teaches students how to perform X-rays, including evaluating the diagnostic quality of images, patient care and quality control. Students also gain expert knowledge in radiation safety and protection practices. Many of the radiographic examinations and procedures involve working alongside physicians, other technologists, nurses and non-medical personnel.

Work Integrated Learning: Clinical Placement

This program has Work Integrated Learning (WIL). WIL is a form of experiential learning that integrates academic studies with relevant work-based learning. Experiences are directly tied to curriculum and part of an approved program of study.

Hands-on, industry-relevant skills

Students attend classes on a full-time basis at NAIT. Upon completion of Level 1, the student progresses to an affiliated clinical site to complete the clinical training. Shift rotation including evenings, nights and weekend days, during the clinical phase will be scheduled.

  • Graduate students who possess competencies and behaviours required for entry-level radiological technologists in accordance with the prevailing competency profiles of the ACMDTT and CAMRT.
  • Provide an educational experience that instills in the graduate a commitment for continued learning and an inquiring attitude.

  • Graduate students who demonstrate compassionate, safe and quality health care to a diverse population.
  • Provide a learning experience with which graduates will be highly satisfied.

Classroom and study hours

Students can expect to spend, on average:

  • 25 hours per week attending classes over the course of a semester.
  • 10 to 20 hours per week studying and completing class assignments.
  • 40 hours per week during clinical (hours may include early or late shifts and some weekends).
  • As part of the NAIT MRT Program, all students are required to complete clinical rotations at x-ray facilities in Alberta, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. The MRT program will do its best to place the students at their first choice; however, this may not be feasible. Clinical sites are offered in Edmonton and area, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Hinton, Wetaskiwin, Camrose, Cold Lake, Lloydminster, Bonnyville, Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Red Deer and Peace River.

Career Outcomes

The Medical Radiologic Technology field continues to experience tremendous technological changes in diagnostic methods due to the incorporation of computers and advancements in digital imaging technology.

Upon successful completion of the MRT program the graduate is eligible to challenge the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) entry-to-practice certification examination to become a certified radiological technologist.

In order to practice as a Medical Radiation Technologist in the province of Alberta, technologists are required to be registered with the Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists (ACMDTT) to obtain a license to practice.

Please refer to the Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists (ACMDTT) website to learn more about their requirements for licensing/mandatory registration and declaration of conduct, which may include disclosure of information related to criminal convictions and professional misconduct or incompetence as well as any personal factors that could impact the ability to practice safely.
