About the Program
NAIT's Alternative Energy Technology diploma explores non-traditional energy sources, providing students with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed for careers in a growing sector of the economy. Consumer demand for alternative energy sources in new and retrofitting projects is growing rapidly. This diploma will prepare you for a career in a diverse field, with the knowledge and skills needed to support and promote the growing sustainable energy industry throughout Western Canada.
The program focuses on the major alternative energy sources, including:
- Fuel Cell
Solar PV Reference Array - NAIT, in partnership with the City of Edmonton, has built a solar PV reference array system to study the effects of panel angle on the efficiency of solar energy capture and to study the effects of snow load (adherence and persistence) upon the panels. The array itself has 6 pairs of solar panels, with each pair set at different angles (14, 18, 27, 45, 53, and 90 degrees). One panel from each pair is cleared of snow while the other is left to shed or accumulate snow as weather permits. Annual reports on the effect of snow will be submitted to the city for 5 years.
A duplicate array, built by NAIT students, was installed in Grande Prairie to compare the micro-climate effects of that region of the province. The system was commissioned in May 2013.
Fuel Cell Project - NAIT created Canada's first high voltage, fully operational commercial fuel cell in 2003. It provided approximately 5-8% of NAIT's power needs, and was twice as efficient as a standard power plant. The electricity produced was used in NAIT's power system, and the heat produced was used to heat the swimming pool and showers in the Activities Centre. The mission of NAIT's Fuel Cell development program was to develop fuel generation prototypes for fuel cells and to support the research, development, and commercialization of fuel cells.
