The training program for medical radiologic technologists is a collaborative program between NAIT and participating practicum sites throughout Alberta. The student attends classes on a full-time basis for the didactic portion at NAIT. In Semester 2, the student attends two weeks of orientation in the diagnostic imaging department of an affiliated practicum site. Upon completion of the didactic portion, the student returns to the affiliated practicum site to complete the clinical training. Shift rotation during the clinical phase will be scheduled. Students are provided with study days during the clinical practicum. Successful completion of the program allows the student to be eligible for certification as a registered technologist in Canada.
Many of the radiographic examinations and procedures involve working alongside physicians, other technologists, nurses and non-medical personnel. The ability to work closely with others and demonstrate a sense of responsibility are important requirements for an effective medical radiologic technologist.
A genuine interest in people and their well-being is essential, since the technologist is invariably involved with people in various states of illness or injury. Considerate, tolerant and courteous patient care is as important a quality as technical proficiency.
