Program Model/Requirements

Students are required to successfully complete four semesters (17 weeks each) as well as a 15 week co-operative work experience over a two-year period in order to be eligible to receive their diploma.

The program is comprised of 34 common core courses (25 – 85 hrs. each) and a 15 week co-operative work experience for a total of 2,350 program hours.

The Co-op Work Term is designed to allow students an opportunity to integrate and apply skills and knowledge gained in their first year of courses by providing them opportunities to use these skills in real world situations.   During the co-op work terms, students take on various occupational health and safety responsibilities and projects in business, industry, government, education and non-profit organizations.  The experiences must be at the competency level of the program in scope and present new learning experiences for the students.

At NAIT, students in the Occupational Health and Safety Diploma program are required to participate in a four month (15 week) work co-operative.  The work co-operative is semester three of the program and would be completed prior to completing semester four and semester five of the program.   During the co-op work term students have the opportunity to acquire additional professional skills; to assess potential career directions; and to gain career and education-related work experience.
