A carpenter leans over and inspects framing.

About the program

Carpenters build, renovate and repair structures. They often work with wood or wood substitutes, but they can also handle other materials, like concrete and steel. In Alberta, carpenters are also called framers.

There is a huge scope to what a carpenter can do, from installing windows to building concrete forms to constructing scaffolding and beyond. Carpenters can work for many different businesses or for themselves as subcontractors.

This diversity means carpenters play an important role in Alberta’s economy. It also contributes to their job prospects and can keep the work interesting. There is always more to learn for carpenters.

And NAIT is a great place to learn it. With four full carpentry training shops and our dedicated team of experienced instructors, NAIT can train up to 900 apprentices per year.
