Apprenticeship is a method of gaining the expertise needed to become a skilled tradesperson. This is done through a combination of on-the-job experience and classroom training.

Most apprenticeship programs are 3-4 periods in length, with an average of 8 weeks for each training period. In addition, there are specific allotments of on-the-job training hours associated with each period, so most apprentices complete 1 period per calendar year.

Hands-on, industry-relevant training

If you like working with your hands and developing special skills that can be used in a variety of ways, then you will enjoy being a sheet metal worker.

Sheet metal workers, by nature of the profession, do a lot of custom fabrication to match the job requirements. You will make some products at a shop and install them at the construction site, whereas other products – such as roofing and siding – have to be measured and cut on site.

Training at NAIT

The Sheet Metal Worker apprenticeship term is:

  • 4 years (four 12-month periods)
  • minimum of 1425 hours on-the-job training each year
  • 10 weeks of technical training each year

Enter the workforce with confidence

As a sheet metal worker, you will be employed by sheet metal, air conditioning and heating contractors in residential, commercial and industrial construction. You might be hired by roofing contractors to install flashing and coping. You could also become self-employed or work in shops with other tradespeople.

Experienced sheet metal workers can become specialists in design and layout work, or in estimating the cost of installations. Some advance to supervisory positions.
