Course Overview

It seems as if new websites with mapping and GIS functionality are springing up every day. This course uses Open Source software to build a GIS website that goes beyond mere web mapping. Participants start by downloading all software pieces, installing them, setting them up and configuring the software. The course begins with the web browser, Apache, then discusses services that create the web mapping/GIS data that can be disseminated over that web, details how the services are exposed to client applications, and concludes with the client-side application that can consume the web mapping/GIS services. After the detailed explanation on how web GIS works, the course includes programming of the two most popular web mapping application in use today: ArcGIS Server JavaScript API, and the use of KML files with Google Earth.
Recommended: CCTO101 Windows Desktop Operating System or any other Windows operating system, equivalent courses or practical experience.
