Full-time Studies

Definitions

Full-time studies:

NAIT considers you to be in full-time studies if you are taking 60% or more of a full course load.

  • See “Students with disabilities” below for information on reduced course load (RCL).

Course load:

Your course load refers to the number of credits you’re taking. At NAIT, your course load is expressed as a percentage of a full course load. The number of credits that make up a full course load can vary by program.

  • For example, if a full course load for your program is 15 credits, and you’re taking 9 credits, that’s 60% of a full course load (9 divided by a total of 15 = 0.6 = 60%).

How many credits do I need to be a full-time student at NAIT?

You are considered a full-time student when you are enrolled in at least 60% of a full course load in a term.

To determine the minimum number of credits you need to be considered a full-time student for your program, refer to the table below.  If you are taking at least the number of credits shown for your program NAIT will consider you a full-time student.

For spring and summer terms, please note that the course load you require to be considered full-time at NAIT may not be the same as the full-time course load required for student aid.

Verifying your NAIT full-time status

You can use your Confirmation of Enrolment in MyNAIT to verify your full-time status for each term. Go to your MyNAIT portal:

  • Select Open Self Service
  • Choose Manage classes tile
  • Select Confirmation of Enrolment

Programs with additional credit requirements or other programs

Students in the following programs have unique requirements to be considered full-time. If you are in one of these circumstances and require a letter confirming your status as a full-time student, you can request a customized Confirmation of Enrollment letter using the online Contact Form. Select tile Current Course/Program >> Transcripts, Parchments, Letters >> Official Letter Request

Co-op, work placement or clinical

If you are enrolled in a co-op/work placement or clinical, your required number of credits may differ from the table below. You will be considered a full-time student if your work placement is 35 hours per week or more.

International Professional Development Certificates

To be considered a full-time student for continuing education programs, including all International Professional Development Certificates, you must have a minimum of 135 instructional hours per term.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Students in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes must enrol in at least two classes per term to be considered full-time by NAIT and in at least three classes to be considered full-time for Foundational Learning Assistance funding.

Taking both ESL and classes in another program

If you are taking both ESL classes and classes in another program at the same time, you must enrol in either three program classes or two English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to be considered full-time.

Students with disabilities

Students with disabilities may be approved to take a reduced course load (RCL), which will allow you to be considered a full-time student if you are enrolled in at least 40% of a full course load. For more information regarding reduced course loads and disability grant funding, please book an appointment with a Learning Advisor.

Refer to the following table to see the minimum number of credits you will need to be considered full-time at NAIT (40% of a full course load) with an approved RCL.
