About the program

Heavy equipment technicians work on the biggest machines in Alberta. They keep these machines working so the machines can keep our industries moving.

These technicians maintain, repair and overhaul heavy vehicles and industrial equipment connected to or moved by a power unit. This program can open doors anywhere heavy equipment is used. It can take you into forestry, mining, landscaping, construction, agriculture, transportation and beyond.

There are four streams in this program, each leading to one or more journeyperson certifications:

  • transport-trailer mechanic
  • truck and transport mechanic
  • heavy-duty equipment mechanic
  • heavy equipment technician

Whatever stream you choose, you’re in for a dynamic and engaging apprenticeship guided by NAIT’s experienced and dedicated instructors.

There are strong employment opportunities for heavy-duty mechanics in Alberta and across Canada right now and into the medium-term future.
