Enrolling and Attending Classes

Diploma, degree and certificate enrolment

General

Will I need to enrol in my courses? Or will my program enrol me?

Your course enrolment method will depend on your program. Look up your program on the Program Delivery page to find your course enrolment type.

The Office of the Registrar will communicate to students via email mid-fall with more information about enrolment for the upcoming winter term – including who is responsible for your course enrolment.

What program delivery methods are available?

As we prepare for the 2021-22 academic year, these are program delivery modes currently being offered:

  • Blended: this safely combines virtual learning with in-person instruction in shops and labs. In person will be offered when learning outcomes cannot be met through virtual delivery and where safety guidelines can be followed. For health and safety information related to COVID-19, please visit nait.ca/coronavirus.
  • Online, synchronous: this means that your classes will be virtual, in real-time. There are scheduled class times where you must login to your virtual classroom and be (virtually) present with your fellow classmates and instructor.
  • Online, asynchronous: this means that you can engage with the virtual course content at different times (and from different locations and time zones). This self-paced learning allows you to access course content when it suits your schedule.
  • On-Campus: your learning will be done safely in-person, and on-campus. Note: a very limited number of programs are using this delivery mode.

How do I know if my course is online or in-person on campus?

In your MyNAIT Portal Self Service, select the class section to view the class delivery method under the Enrolment Information tab, in Class Notes. You can view more details by selecting the Class Details tab.

  • If a course is delivered online, it will be identified as virtual (online) learning. The course will also list whether it's:
    • synchronous (fixed): this online class is in real-time and scheduled for certain dates and times.
    • asynchronous (flexible): this online class is not scheduled and you can complete the coursework when it suits your schedule.
  • If a course is delivered in-person on campus, it will be identified as on-campus.
  • If a course has both online and in-person requirements, it will state both on-campus and virtual.
  • If a course requires a scheduled time at a jobsite or a supervised work environment, it will state WIL.
  • If a course has a flexible structure where it's optional for students to attend sessions in the classroom, participate online, or do both, it will state hy-flex. Note: this will only be available for a small number of courses.

While not all courses will have all delivery options, most will have an online option.

What if I have student funding?

If you have third party funding and require a confirmation of enrolment, you can request one through your MyNAIT portal after your schedule is built (select Open Self Service > Manage Classes > Confirmation of Enrolment). If you need a letter prior to your enrolment completion due to a funding deadline, you can request a letter by submitting an online Contact Form, select topic: Enrollment/Education Verification, and subcategory: Proposed Confirmation of Enrollment Letter.

If you intend to take your studies part-time or have student funding from another province other than Alberta, please email financialaid@nait.ca to understand how this impacts how you apply for student funding.

If your student funding is provided by Alberta and you are responsible for enrolling in your classes, you need to complete your course enrolment for your winter term by November 30, 2021.

After I am enrolled in my courses, can these courses change?

Yes, your schedule and courses may change leading up to the start date of the class. We will try to limit schedule changes but there may be instances where course changes are necessary, for example a change of instructor may cause a course to change. As you continue to prepare, we recommend that you continue to frequently check your schedule in your MyNAIT portal.

Please note that Student Aid, scholarships, and other funding agencies may have different definitions of full-time status for eligibility. Refer to funding options for more information.

I am responsible for enrolling in classes (self-enrolment)

What does self-enrolment mean?

Whether you're a new student or returning student, this means you are responsible for selecting and enrolling in your classes. Before enrolment opens, you will receive an e-letter in your MyNAIT Portal with your enrolment date, time, and instructions on how to enrol. As course sections can fill up quickly, we recommend you enrol in your classes once enrolment opens.

If you were only able to enrol in your Fall 2021 classes, enrolment for the Winter 2022 term will open on November 5, 2021.

You can prepare for your enrolment date by reviewing the Self Service Guide on your MyNAIT portal for enrolment options and step-by-step guides on how to enrol in your classes.

  • Enrol in Credit Classes: If you know what classes you require, you can enrol by selecting Open Self Service > Manage Classes > Enrol in Credit Classes. For additional support, you can follow this step by step guide (pdf) to enrol.

What if the courses I want aren't available?

For some classes, there may be a waitlist available. If you’re using the Schedule Planner, you can include waitlisted classes in your search by changing the 'Course Status' filter to include classes that are full but have a waitlist open.

Whether or not a waitlist is available, we recommend that you frequently review the available course offerings on your MyNAIT portal. If a new class section is added, you will not automatically be enrolled from a waiting list for a different section.

If courses you need to complete your program are full, or if you have questions about alternative courses that may be transferable to complete your schedule, please contact your program directly. Your program's contact is listed on the homepage of your MyNAIT portal.

Can I change my classes after the enrolment deadline?

Yes – once you've enrolled in courses, you can change your schedule on MyNAIT Student Portal until the add/drop deadline.

The swap function is the best way to drop one class in order to add another one. Using swap (instead of the drop and add functions) will drop a course only if the enrolment in the new course is successful. Learn how to swap a course on your MyNAIT Student Portal.

To ensure you get the class schedule you want, select and enrol in your classes as soon as possible since many courses will fill up quickly.

I am trying to sign up, but the shopping cart says “already enrolled in course, add not processed.” What do I do now?

You may have begun and not finished the checkout process in the last 24 hours. The course is on your MyNAIT portal waiting for secure online payment to confirm your seat in the class.

Please log in to your MyNAIT portal complete online payment through Self Service.

I've been added to a waitlist. What does this mean?

If a course you wish to take says Add to Waitlist instead of Add to Cart, that means that there are no open seats for registration for that section.

You can add yourself to the waitlist at no charge for a chance to be enrolled if space becomes available. If you are enrolled from the waitlist, you will receive an email notice advising you to visit your student portal to make a payment.

Where possible, we recommend enrolling yourself in a different section with available space to ensure you can still complete the course even if you are not enrolled from the waitlist into your preferred section.

Do I need a NAIT student account to sign up for Continuing Education classes? How do I make one?

Yes, you do need a NAIT student account to sign up for Continuing Education classes.

If you are new to NAIT, we recommend creating a NAIT account on the MyNAIT portal. When you are asked for a NAIT ID number, leave the space blank if you have not attended or applied to NAIT before, and our system will generate a new Student ID for you.

Once your account has been made, you can search for a course and add it to your cart. You will complete your payment once you are signed into your account with your new username and password.  More details including a video walkthrough of this process is available at www.nait.ca/register

Technology requirements

The course description says “Mac, Chromebook or tablets are not supported." What are my options to attend virtual courses?

The statement about Windows vs. Mac is for classes that are taught on computers running Windows.

The instructor will be using a Windows operating system for these courses and will not be able to allocate instructional time navigating or troubleshooting differences between Mac/Windows OS.

Some students are comfortable doing that type of troubleshooting themselves, but there may also be software compatibility concerns for your individual course and the instructor will not able to provide direct technical support should you choose to proceed against the program’s recommendation.
