How to Enrol Checklist

 Open studies

Before you get started

While there is no application process for Open Studies, you will need to enrol online in each course you’d like to take. The following checklist is a guide for your enrolment at NAIT. It is intended for reference only as some student entrance and admissions requirements may vary.*

Check with the program office to confirm when Open Studies students can enrol. You can find the email address  and/or phone number on the program page.

Know the credit maximums. Open Studies students can take up to 15 credits per term, and a maximum of 30 credits total before you must apply for a program.

Create a NAIT student account

Your admissions updates and notifications will be sent to your NAIT student portal account. It's important to check it frequently throughout the application process. If you're attending NAIT for the first time, create a MyNAIT portal account: go to MyNAIT portal, click on Sign Up and enter your student ID and personal information.

We recommend using the same email address for both NAIT and your NAIT application so all updates are easily accessible from the same inbox.

You will need:

  • NAIT student ID
  • Email address

Select your courses

Course enrolment works on a first-come, first-served, basis. Availability can change quickly during enrolment time, and you may need to pick a new course section if your preferred section is full. You will be able to see course availability when you add your courses.

To enrol in a course you must meet its prerequisite and co-requisite requirements (if applicable):

  • A prerequisite is a course requirement that must be met before you can take another course.
  • A co-requisite is a course that must be taken at the same time as another. All prerequisite and co-requisite requirements are noted on course pages.

If you’re new to NAIT, you will be prompted to self-declare as an Open Studies student when enrolling in an open studies class in the MyNAIT portal. Whereas if you have attended NAIT before and are returning to take an open studies class, please send us a message using the online chat so you can be activated as an Open Studies student.

Browse your program's course-list to see which courses are offered in Open Studies. Each program determines which of their courses will be available, and not all NAIT courses are available for open studies.

Plan your class schedule

You are encouraged to plan and enrol for both Fall and Winter terms at the same time to prevent scheduling conflicts.

Build the schedule that works best for you using NAIT’s schedule planning tool. You can search for the courses you need, choose specific times and decide when you want to have breaks between classes.

Login to MyNAIT to use the Schedule Planner

The Schedule Planner does not enrol you in courses automatically, and it is possible that a course can fill up while you are using the planner. If you get an error when enrolling in your courses, return to the Schedule Planner, select a different course section and try again.

Enrol in courses

If you add your name to a waitlist, you will be automatically enrolled in the waitlisted class if space opens up. Check your e-letters periodically to see if you have been added into a class you’ve waitlisted, as this is the only way notification will be sent.

What to do if your course is full

If you get an error message that says “Available seats are reserved”  it means the seats available for Open Studies students in this class have been filled. Course enrolment is on a first-come, first-served basis, and Open Studies availability can change quickly during enrolment time.

There are a few things you can try to get into the course you want.

  • Try an earlier or later section of the course. There may still be seats available at other times or days for the same course.
  • Check back regularly. New seats may open up. This usually happens closer to the course start date.

Pay your fees

Tuition for Open Studies is based on the credit value of each course you are enrolled in. Add and pay for courses, using your draft schedule as a reference. Full payment is due at the time of course enrolment.

It’s also important to be realistic about your savings and current financial situation, both now and during the time you will have to complete your courses. Do you anticipate you will need financial assistance or support?

All students pay tuition on a per-credit basis. Open Studies students must pay in full when they enrol for a course. View course fees and additional expenses.

Student loans are available for Open Studies students. Access to funding is for no more than 12 months and will be applied towards loan life duration if you are accepted into a program.

Review and apply for scholarships, awards, grants and bursaries. See scholarships for more information

Alberta Works Grant funding may be available if you are planning on attending Academic Upgrading through Open Studies.

Cancelling or changing your schedule

Full payment of Open Studies fees must be made at the time of course enrolment or your seat will not be held.

If you decide that you do not want to attend a course that you've already added to your schedule, you must drop this course before the add/drop deadline. If you do not drop this course on time, you will not get a refund.

You cannot drop a class by simply not paying your fees.
